This Special Crash Investigations report documents the rollover crash of a 2014 Ford E-350 Type II ambulance that ran off the roadway, struck a road sign, a tree, and then rolled over. The unbelted 25-year-old female driver sustained fatal injuries. The unbelted 27-year-old male EMT/front passenger sustained serious injuries. The ambulance was traveling without active emergency lights or sirens, and its patient compartment was unoccupied. The driver tested positive for zolpidem (trade name Ambien), a sedative-hypnotic used to treat insomnia, and likely fell asleep while driving. The crash occurred in Arkansas in January 2023.
