Abstract:The causes and control of soil erosion, the maintenance of vegetative ground cover, and weed control and eradication are discussed in detail. Design recommendations made for the control of soil erosion include the flattening of backslopes and fills, provision for interceptor ditches at the top of cut slopes and on the berms of deep cuts, and the utilization of a physical barrier along the outer side of the shoulder on long slopes and on the inside curves. Other recommendations are made which relate to fertilizer application, weeping lovegrass, vegetative mulch, and the incorporation of lime into the soil. The causes of soil erosion on Oklahoma highways are examined. Research is reported that was directed towards finding satisfactory and economical methods for the prevention and control of soil erosion. The findings and conclusions of the study are presented. These conclusions relate to plant species, soils and soil fertility, slope and exposure, and cultural practices best suited for the establishment and maintenance of permanent vegetation. Recommendations are presented related to the maintenance of vegetative ground covers. These cover the aspects of mowing, grading, fertilization and weed control. Factors responsible for the loss of established ground covers are examined, and findings are reported of studies of plant response to fertilizers. Recommendations are made relating to broadleaf weed and annual grass control, Johnsongrass control and soil sterilization. Methods of weed control are described, and details are given of the findings of the study.
