Abstract:

NHTSA’s field crash investigation-based data collection programs are the Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS), Special Crash Investigations (SCI), and the Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network (CIREN). The CISS builds on the long running National Automotive Sampling System Crashworthiness Data System (NASS CDS). The NHTSA investigation-based programs collect detailed crash data to help scientists and engineers analyze motor vehicle crashes and injuries. CISS collects data on a representative sample of minor, serious, and fatal crashes each involving at least one passenger vehicle – cars, light trucks, SUVs, and vans – towed from the scene. Beginning in 2024 CISS also collects information on Non-Motorist crashes. This publication is the coding manual for CISS, SCI, and CIREN for 2024.
