Abstract:This paper outlines a new application technology for top of rail (TOR) train mounted friction control, particularly suited for captive freight fleets. The spray application system is mounted on a revenue-generating freight car located immediately behind the trailing locomotive. Compared with locomotive mounted systems [1, 2, 3], the new approach provides higher capital utilization, no impact on locomotive maintenance scheduling, and a simple but robust system. A prototype system has been successfully designed, installed, & field-tested on a revenue-generating ore car at QCM’s facility in Port Cartier, Quebec. As well as equipment performance, results are also described on lateral force reduction.
