  • Abstract:
This research project investigates the implementation of advanced vehicle and pedestrian detection technologies to enhance traffic signal operations and safety across high-volume corridors. The primary objectives include improving signal timing, pedestrian crossing efficiency, and truck flow during free-flow conditions. A phased deployment introduced cutting-edge sensors and radar systems, including Bluetooth travel time sensors and Wavetronix Advanced 200-E units, to collect real-time data and optimize traffic management.

The proof-of-concept evaluation demonstrated notable improvements in travel times, particularly along the Yellowstone Corridor, with reductions up to 13.14% in certain segments. However, challenges in pedestrian detection accuracy and data limitations impacted the ability to extend pedestrian clearance times. Despite deviations from the original proposal, such as revised performance measures and evaluation criteria, the project achieved a benefit-cost ratio exceeding 1.0, indicating strong potential for scalable implementation.

Lessons learned highlight the importance of manageable project scope, accurate performance metrics, and inter-agency coordination. Future efforts will focus on refining pedestrian detection systems and expanding infrastructure to support advanced technologies, ensuring continued improvements in traffic flow and safety.
