Abstract:Contributors to traffic safety hazards include lane changes in the presence of queues at signalized intersec9ons and bus stops, mixes of vehicle classes, speed variability, and vehicle overtaking. Tradi9onal data collec9on methods that are constrained in 9me and space are prone to biased sampling. Taking advantage of video imagery recorded by transit bus-mounted cameras for other purposes offers an opportunity to overcome this bias. In this project the available, repeated, and extensive imagery recorded by such cameras for iden9fying queue presence and length related safety hazards is inves9gated. The increased presence of queues in associa9on with construc9on zones is also explored. The campus of The Ohio State University roadway network is used as a living lab testbed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach in iden9fying queuing over space, including around construc9on zones, and 9me. Further improvements and extensions are discussed.
