Abstract:The article examines the international growth of Global Positioning System (GPS), the system that was originally developed more than 20 years ago and is now an $8 billion industry. Its uses include numerous civilian applications around the globe, including vehicle tracking, recreational uses such as hiking and boating, emergency response, and mapping and surveying. One of the biggest beneficiaries has, however, been aviation. The focus of the article is the work the Volpe Center and its Center for Navigation are doing to augment the system to meet the performance criteria for the more stringent phases of flight.
