Abstract:The Shell vibrator has been used to investigate the behavior of a number of highway structures in the state of Texas. Measurements have been made of the wavelength at the free surface over a range of frequencies. It is found that the phase velocity of the wave is not constant but varies with the frequency. It is anticipated that the manner of the variation of the velocity relates to some of the physical properties of the structure. The object of the work was to determine what information can be obtained from the frequency-dispersion curves of phase velocity which have been obtained during the experimental work. Ultimately, it is desired to deduce, in numerical terms, values of the structural parameters, such as the interface depths of the layers composing the system and the elastic constants of the materials composing the layers.
