Abstract:The purpose of this report are: (1) to identify the direct, as well as latent, demand for public and mass transportation services, and (2) to assess the factors which are critical to developing expanded transit usage. Individual and behavioral characteristics explaining transit demand are assayed, as well as transit system and population characteristics influencing the demand for mass transportation. In addition, forecasts of transit demand by Texas transit leaders are included in the report. It is often problematic to tie systemwide demand estimation models to micro-level characteristics, such as individual preferences, but increasing transit ridership is dependent on identifying and isolating both sets of 11 critical factors. 11 Once these critical factors have been evaluated, transit personnel can proceed to plan service alterations and improvements to better serve the needs of the potential market, which is the key to a successful transit marketing effort.
