Abstract:In Technical Report No. 1 of this series, there was presented a hypothesis describing in mathematical terms the deformation characteristics of granular materials. In the present report the differential equations of the theory of elasticity are extended to include materials that deform in accordance with the hypothesis. The new equations resemble those of elasticity but are non-linear, and it appears that solutions of practical interest can be found only by the use of approximate numerical methods programmed for high-speed computers.
