Abstract:Bridge flooding can dramatically impact mobility, and climate change impacts are expected to increase flooding frequency in the future. There is an urgent need to develop technology to provide accurate, near real-time water level information from bridges. The Clemson Intelligent River® project has developed an innovative low-cost platform for water level monitoring from bridges. This “BridgeBoxtm” uses radar technology to measure water level and then sends this data over IoT cellular networks to a cloud-based system that can share water levels and flood to improve mobility during extreme precipitation and flooding events. Water level distance accuracy was validated through laboratory and field testing and bridge mounting systems have been developed to enable mounting on various bridge structures. Installation surveying methodology has been developed. Finally, multiple test deployments have been done in collaboration with local governments.
