Abstract:The TracGlide Top-of-Rail Lubrication System is an advanced, computer-controlled technology designed to optimize rail lubrication while addressing safety and environmental concerns. Developed over 11 years of laboratory and field testing, including collaborations with railroads and Argonne National Laboratory, TracGlide precisely applies a water-based, environmentally safe lubricant to the tops of rails as trains pass. This targeted application reduces rail and wheel wear, decreases fuel consumption, and enhances track safety by minimizing residue buildup and preventing excessive slipperiness. Preliminary results indicate energy savings of over 7%, potential annual fuel savings exceeding $400 million, and reductions in maintenance costs by up to 25%. The system’s innovative use of sensors and real-time data ensures efficient lubrication tailored to operational conditions, heralding a potential revolution in rail industry efficiency and safety.
