This study was designed to determine the economic changes that occurred in the small town of Merkel as a result of constructing Interstate 20 around the principal residential and commercial areas. The results of the study may be used in anticipating the economic effects of the Interstate Highway System upon comparable small towns. The principal objectives were to determine the effects of the Interstate System upon: 1. Land values 2. Land uses 3. Business activity 4. Travel habits, and 5. General community development.
