Abstract:Effect of increased use of super single and singled-out dual wheel assemblies on South Dakota's flexible pavement network was studied. A literature review was performed to document the history of tire loading laws in South Dakota and other neighboring states. A limited traffic survey was conducted to assess the present levels of the use of these wheel assemblies. Field tests and computer simulations were performed to assess the impact of the increased tire loads on South Dakota's flexible pavement network. An economic evaluation to assess the implications of the increased tire loads to South Dakota DOT was also made.
