Abstract:This report synthesizes information from a desk scan of bridge construction procedures and processes of participating State transportation agencies (DOTs) and summarizes the proceedings of a peer exchange discussing these topics. The peer exchange was held on December 5-6, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee. Sessions of the peer exchange consisted of presentations by State DOTs on best practices and subsequent discussions. Topics included construction inspector training, certification and staffing, statutory changes to the Buy America program, bridge demolition, use and implementation of innovative and unique materials, implementation of accelerated bridge construction techniques, constructability reviews, repair and rehabilitation practices, rising construction costs, supply chain issues, inflation, schedule delays, and other project considerations and prevalent or reoccurring construction issues. A total of 27 individuals from 17 agencies, the FHWA, and the consultant team participated in the peer exchange.
