Abstract:Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology, the ability of vehicles to communicate with each other, with the roadside infrastructure, and with other travelers such as pedestrians, presents the opportunity to prevent crashes, save lives, and to improve the efficiency and sustainability of our transportation network. Across the U.S., State and local agencies have realized the opportunities for V2X technologies to address these transportation challenges and many agencies have taken the necessary steps to advance pilots and operational deployments of these technologies in collaboration with industry. A number of States and local agencies have deployed V2X systems using “direct” Long Term Evolution-Vehicle-to-Everything (LTE-V2X) technology (a form of Cellular-V2X) within the upper portion of the 5.9 gigahertz (GHz) ITS radio band. In addition, the use of cellular “network” communications for delivery of V2X messages has also been demonstrated for safety advisory and other applications not as time sensitive as imminent crash scenarios. The document covers V2X fundamentals and is both for novices and those with more V2X experience. This document identifies deployment strategies and provides agencies with practical information and resources on V2X deployment that can be considered and potentially applied in the short-term. The document covers many relevant topics and serves as a “resource of resources” on V2X deployment.
