Abstract:This project aimed to enhance bridge inspection processes by leveraging unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technology, building on a successful 2018 pilot study that demonstrated the potential of UASs to improve inspection efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Key objectives included the development of a comprehensive UAS flight proficiency assessment tool, the implementation of a robust training program, and the provision of commercial-grade UAS equipment to SCDOT bridge inspection engineers across all seven districts. The assessment tool, designed to complement the FAA's Part 107 knowledge test, included scenario-based questions and aircraft control exercises to evaluate UAS pilots' capabilities comprehensively. The training program combined online and in-person instruction. Online training prepared participants for the Part 107 exam and covered regulatory compliance and basic flight control using simulators. In-person training consisted of three intensive two-day bootcamps held at Clemson University's Experiential Learning Lab, providing hands- on experience with the equipment. The program achieved significant success, with 20 out of 21 participants passing the Part 107 exam. In a post-workshop satisfaction survey, 92% of the participants indicated that they strongly agreed with the statement that “Overall, I am satisfied with the workshop and would recommend it to other bridge inspectors.”
