Abstract:From October 1983 to November 1984, a lubrication study funded by the Federal Railroad Administration was conducted by the Association of American Railroads at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) at the Transportation Test Center in Pueblo, Colorado. The FAST Lubrication Study involved: Wayside Lubricator Pumps - Five designs tested for reliability under normal (train pass) actuation. Lubricator Blade Configurations - Three types evaluated for lubricant distribution characteristics. Alternate Lubricant Application Systems - Two locomotive-mounted lubricators (spray and roller types), a lubricator vehicle (boxcar), and a hi-rail lubricator system tested for overall performance. Track Lubricants - Eight common and non-conventional types tested for overall performance. Over lubrication - Measurement of high rail lateral forces after deliberate over application of lubricant.
