Abstract:E-commerce services and facilities have the benefits of bringing new employment opportunities to communities and meeting consumer needs, but they also attract heavy traffic, which results in congestion and negative environmental and economic impacts. A University of Texas Center for Transportation Research project recently completed research on future e-commerce facility siting. The project considered consumer demands, workplace standards, and the tax and zoning policies of governing bodies (including TxDOT’s own land-use regulation and standards). Researchers provided a predictive mechanism that TxDOT can proactively leverage to influence the siting of e-commerce facilities in ways that bring home their positives to Texans, while tempering negative repercussions for the transportation network.
