Abstract:This report summarizes the state-of-practice in the evaluation, design, and implementation of chemical subgrade stabilization. Four Tennessee soils (two A-6 and two A-7-6) were obtained and mix designs were prepared to provide examples of the testing required for chemical stabilization. The stabilized soils met the design unconfined strength criteria of 100 psi using 3 to 5% Type IL cement. In addition, a testing manual was developed for the laboratory and field testing of chemically stabilized subgrade. Concise fact sheets were compiled for the major surficial AASHTO soil types in TN that provide typical treated and untreated soil properties. The fact sheets also graphically depict the extent of the various soil types within Tennessee. Finally, the chemical subgrade treatment specification was revised to reflect the state of practice.
