  • Abstract:
Aviation incidents and accidents have often been linked to inadequate monitoring of flight deck information. Still, to date, limited data and guidance exist on how pilots should, and how they actually do allocate their attention to various flight deck displays. This project aims to help fill this gap with the goal to inform design and training interventions that better support flight crews in monitoring their flight path, automation status, and associated behaviors. First, a review of the scientific literature, regulatory documents, and guidance material related to visual scanning on modern transport category aircraft was conducted. Building on the findings from the literature review, three focus groups were held with twelve aviation professionals to learn about (1) current needs and approaches to scan training, (2) factors that lead to breakdowns in monitoring, and (3) the effect of flight deck design on visual scanning.
