Abstract:

In 2019, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) authorized a research and synthesis study to document the progress and direction toward achieving nationwide electronic toll collection (ETC) interoperability. This report discusses the results of that study and identifies current efforts toward nationwide interoperability, challenges to overcome, near-term trajectory of achieving nationwide toll interoperability, and the potential for emerging technologies and business models to influence achieving national ETC interoperability.
