Abstract:This is an instructional manual developed for college-level railway engineering courses, intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues of train performance modeling. Topics addressed include train resistance, tractive effort, acceleration, braking, balancing speed and energy consumption. A wide variety of train types including both passenger and freight trains are modeled and different equipment types including locomotive hauled and self-propelled. International (US and European) applications cited all focus on calculations with diesel trains.
