Abstract:This study examines the impact of alternative propulsion systems and fuels on the deployment and operation of the Automated Highway System (AHS). Alternative propulsion systems and fuels are compared to the gasoline-fueled spark-ignition engine in the areas of: specific power, drivability, pleasability, emissions, infrastructure support, production readiness, cost, and energy efficiency. Issues and risks related to the deployment of a large fleet of alternative propulsion vehicles on the AHS are examined. Alternative AHS configurations are identified and analyzed for their compatibility with alternative propulsion systems and fuels. Long-term design issues and enabling technologies required to incorporate alternative propulsion systems and fuels into AHS are identified.
