The researchers developed the Asphalt Mixture Automated Testing System with Zero Intervention (AMAZE), shown in Figure 1. The AMAZE includes five units: • An air voids measurement unit. • A specimen storage unit. • Two temperature conditioning units, one for room temperature and the other for high temperature (e.g., 50 °C). • A material testing loading unit with automated dumping component. • A robot arm. The researchers designed and tested each of the five units to ensure that they worked as planned. Furthermore, the researchers evaluated the AMAZE with multiple asphalt mixture specimens in terms of air voids, cracking resistance, rutting resistance, and indirect tensile (IDT) strength.
