Abstract:

To improve the safety of the electric power charging system for rolling stock, including both propulsion and ancillary use of stored electric power, this project proposes the use of Intelligent Wireless Power Transfer (IWPT) technology for power charging. The proposed IWPT technology removes humans from the process of locomotive battery charging, thus potentially reducing the chance of electrical shock to zero and improving the safety of the railroad environment from electrical fire. The IWPT system can assess rolling stock in motion and detect faulting and fire issues within the power circuits to significantly enhance rolling stock fire and electric safety.
