Abstract:The Los Angeles rail transit system is the largest infrastructure investment in the City and County in decades. Transportation investments influence not only the way persons travel, but also the character of neighborhoods and the pattern of building, land use, and land prices. For that reason, rail transit generally and rail transit in Los Angeles have been increasingly caught up in the debate about displacement and gentrification. Do these investments increase housing prices in neighborhoods, forcing out the long-time residents who might most benefit from the new transportation options? This report is the result of a four-year research program that brings new data to bear on this question. It utilizes new data along with existing data sources to establish a fact base that can inform transit, housing, and land use planning in Los Angeles.
