Abstract:The purpose of this project was to evaluate the performance of carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced concrete. Carbon nanotubes have exceptional mechanical properties and small scales. Combining them with composite material enables engineers to further modify material microstructure. Carbon nanotubes have been used extensively in modifying cement properties, but few studies have evaluated carbon nanotube’s effects on concrete. A laboratory investigation into the effect of CNTs on the performance of concrete mixtures versus traditional PennDOT concrete mixtures was conducted and the benefits evaluated. The results from the laboratory testing were used to estimate the life cycle costs for both traditional PennDOT concrete and the CNT concrete. Recommendations relative to the feasibility of incorporating CNT technology for PennDOT concrete mixtures as well as any potential benefits or disadvantages have been made.
