• Abstract:
  The Proposed Design Specifications for Steel Box Girder Bridges as contained in Report No. FHWA-TS-80-205 are evaluated. The results of comparative designs done using the AASHTO code and the proposed specification are summarized. The differences in the designs are explained with reference to the differing design requirements of the two specifications. The practicality and ease of application of the proposed specification are discussed. The results of parametric studies done to investigate the application of the proposed specification to the design of principal elements of box girders are included. The conclusions and recommendations based on the evaluation are also included. Appendix A contains comparative design examples contrasting the use of the AASHTO code with the proposed specification. Appendix B contains a discussion of areas of the proposed specification that could benefit from additional clarification or comment.
