Abstract:This document provides instructional material covering the analysis, design, fabrication and construction of skewed and horizontally curved steel bridges using Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). This manual is based on the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Fifth Edition, 2010. It has been developed for highway structural engineers with 0 to approximately 20 years of experience and is presented in US Customary Units. This manual is comprised of five chapters. The first chapter provides a general overview, it describes the evolution of curved girder bridge design specifications, and it provides a review of LRFD fundamentals. The second chapter describes structural analysis for skewed and curved steel girder bridges, and it includes influence surfaces, bearing constraints, approximate methods, 2D refined methods, 3D refined methods and recommended levels of analysis. The third chapter provides design considerations, and it includes preliminary design decisions, girder design verifications and design of detail items. The fourth chapter describes fabrication and construction considerations unique to skewed or curved steel girder bridges. The fifth chapter provides LRFD step-by-step design examples for a skewed and curved I-girder bridge and for a curved tub girder bridge. AASHTO references are provided throughout this manual. Key reference documents used in the development of this manual are given immediately following each section in each chapter (as applicable).
