Abstract:Travel data, also known as household travel or activity data, usually consist of travel diary or log of all the trips (tours or trip chains) undertaken by an individual or a household during a given period of time (usually one day.) Travel diary data is critical as it is the only source of data that allows analysts to estimate total vehicle miles of travel for different sub-groups or residents of different locations including their mode choices and spatial patterns. There are three main objectives of this project that are intended to facilitate discussion of whether Vermont should purchase a National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) Add-on sample in 2015: (1) To tabulate the travel data needs of Vermont stakeholders, (2) To assess the strengths and weaknesses of using the NHTS Add-on to meet Vermont travel data needs, and (3) To outline alternatives for collecting VT travel data including frequency, key variables and budget considerations.
