Abstract:This report describes an assessment of test procedure repeatability for an “adaptive driving beam” (ADB) compliance test procedure. This work is a portion of NHTSA’S efforts in support of a rulemaking activity initiated by a 2018 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) [1] that proposed to revise FMVSS No. 108 to allow ADB headlighting systems as optional equipment on light vehicles in the United States. The compliance test procedure involves full vehicle dynamic test scenarios performed on a test track. Testing was conducted per that test procedure to provide the data needed for this analysis, and to support resolution of comments on NHTSA’s proposal. To isolate the repeatability of the test procedure from that of the headlighting system of the vehicle used in the testing, the headlighting system was operated in lower beam mode. Testing based on SAE’s Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J3069 “Adaptive Driving Beam” test procedure was also conducted for comparison.
