Inaccessible routes between locations can be a major barrier to participation for people with physical disabilities. Even with regulations, inaccessible sidewalks continue to create problems for wheelchair users. Existing technologies do not offer a comprehensive solution to the measurement, data collection, and information storage and display of curb ramps and sidewalks. The University of Pittsburgh was tasked to build a device to help streamline curb-ramp measurements. Through design changes, focus groups and interviews with industry stakeholders, the curb-ramp design and inspection system (CRD/CIS) device was created. The CIS prototype is ready to begin the implementation phase to help bridge the gap in curb-ramp design.
