Abstract:Mobile maintenance operations on multi-lane highways, such as pothole patching and sweeping, present unique safety challenges due to the highly variable conditions encountered. While the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio Turnpike currently have procedures for temporary traffic control for mobile maintenance operations, both agencies wanted to review these procedures and identify new strategies and technologies that could be used to improve the safety of these operations, especially those for shadow vehicles with impact attenuators (truck or trailer mounted). The research tasks included a review of the state of the practice, identification of potential safety improvements, field evaluation of select safety improvements, and development of a roll-ahead distance alarm.
