Rock slopes pose a hazard to the traveling public when weathering processes dislodge portions of the slope that can fall into the road. Both the design of new rock slopes and the hazard assessment of existing rock slopes need improvement to increase safety against rockfall, construct better engineered slopes and reduce short-and long-term maintenance costs. This research summarizes rockfall assessments performed with the aid of Smart Rock sensors. The Smart Rock is a sensor system equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, embedded in a regular rock, to measure impact (acceleration) and rotational velocity (gyroscope). These devices were used to evaluate rockfall events from the perspective of the falling rock.
