Abstract:Bridge prefabrication minimizes on-site operations and closure times, and can also contribute to improving the quality and durability of bridge elements as well as reducing the environmental impact of bridge construction. To date, bridge prefabrication has mainly focused on superstructure elements. The use of prefabricated substructure elements can also help speed up the construction process and prevent lane closures. This synthesis project has evaluated the state of the art of national research and construction projects involving precast columns for bridges. The primary objectives of this project were to (a) review and synthesize published literature and current DOT practice on precast columns, (b) compile lessons learned from previous projects and studies, (c) evaluate the suitability of existing precast column solutions, and (d) determine criteria for the selection of precast columns over conventional cast-in-place solutions for Texas bridges. The state-of-the-art review has identified a variety of precast column systems that have already been used in 18 states. These systems can be classified as full-height precast columns, precast segmental columns, and precast shells. The review has also identified a variety of connection details, including grouted ducts, grouted splice couplers, post-tensioned joints, socket connection, and pocket connections. The column systems and connection details have been evaluated by considering aspects such as fabrication, construction and durability, and recommendations for their implementation have been provided.
