Abstract:Through its Emerging Mobility Program, the National Park Service (NPS) implemented an electric, automated shuttle pilot at Wright Brothers National Memorial in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). This pilot, dubbed the “Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation” (CASSI), ran from April to July 2021 with a single automated shuttle provided by EasyMile and operated by Transdev. The CASSI shuttle served over 3,300 riders on more than 800 trips over the course of the pilot. The CASSI shuttle faced some operational challenges, with a significant number of disengagements and service suspensions stemming from relatively common weather events. Survey results indicated overall satisfaction with the pilot, although most riders rode the shuttle primarily for a fun experience rather than to get to their destination. The NPS and NCDOT also learned many lessons throughout the course of the pilot, on topics such as contracting, planning, and accessibility.
