Abstract:This study is an evolution of the Minnesota Local Road Research Board’s sponsored research Modernizing Road Construction Plans and Documentation (Iowa State University, September 2016). Where previous studies provided high-level practices for transportation, this research examines advances in preliminary (0-30%) design tools and methods that bring ramifications to the larger BIM for Infrastructure project life cycle. This has been an overlooked but vital area that sets the tone for success in civil transportation projects adopting 3D information technologies. An existing traditionally delivered project in Carver County, Minnesota, is mirrored as context to explore the emerging tools and methods. Findings identify changes in functionality and process that modify work breakdown relationships, reduce silos of information, and expedite project delivery. Identified advancements will challenge engineers and draftsman to rethink their roles in the design process as organizations now have the opportunity to re-evaluate workflows and streamline project delivery methods.
