Abstract:This report documents the efforts and results of a one-year research project aimed at improving temporary guide signs in long-term work zones. The researchers held discussions with Texas Department of Transportation personnel to gather information about their experiences with temporary guide signs in work zones. The researchers also performed positive guidance assessments at 21 long-term work zones in Texas. Based on these two research activities, specific issues were identified and prioritized. A human factors study was designed and administered to over 500 online participants. The goal of the study was to obtain driver feedback on practices related to the use of temporary lane guidance signs, strategies for exit lane drops, use of orange signs to provide guide sign information, and the location of the exit number on temporary guide signs. Based on the findings, the researchers developed guidelines and recommendations for improving temporary guide signs in long-term work zones.
