The objectives of this study were to evaluate the field performance of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and perform a statistical analysis on the impact of dimensions of sand filter BMPs on contaminant treatment. Some of the pertinent conclusions from this study are: (1) the combination dry swale/sand filter successfully treated turbidity, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, some nutrients, and some heavy metals (zinc); (2) the bioretention basin showed removal percentages of > ~60% for solids, nutrients, and metals; (3) statistical analysis of the performance of sand filters demonstrated that sand filters are highly effective at solids, turbidity, some metal and total phosphorus removal, but less effective at removing dissolved constituents; and (4) it is recommended that the GDOT BMP selection flowchart include BMP longevity as a factor, as well as differentiate between short/intermediate term and long term maintenance burden.
