Abstract:The FRA Guide for Preparing Accident/Incident Reports was reprinted in 1993. It incorporates many suggestions received from representatives of various segments of the railroad safety community. The primary goal of this revision was to improve uniformity of reporting between railroads though additional clarification of the existing reporting requirements. Because of this, comparisons of the accident/incident experience for the current year with earlier years are still valid. The codes and associated descriptions of the causes of train accidents were updated in the new guide to better categorize the reasons why accidents occur. Although it is still possible to compare major cause code groupings with earlier years, this ability may not exist for all individual causes. This generally is the result of creating new causes to describe situations previously being recorded in miscellaneous categories. The FRA has created a conversion table for reassigning an earlier cause into the most appropriate current code.
