On May 11–12, 2009, during National Bike Month and National Bike to Work Week, the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Interstate and Border Planning sponsored a 1.5-day peer exchange to promote the advancement of bicycling and walking as healthy, efficient, and safe transportation modes. The purpose of the peer exchange, which focused on select transportation agencies’ applications of geographic information systems (GIS) to accomplish various bicycle and pedestrian objectives, was to allow participants with notable GIS applications for bicycle and pedestrian planning the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences. Lessons learned and challenges faced in using GIS for bicycle and pedestrian considerations were also discussed. This report provides a summary of the presentations made and discussions held at the peer exchange. It should serve as a resource for state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and transportation agencies looking to learn more about the implementation of GIS for bicycle and pedestrian planning. The report concludes with a section on the lessons participants stated as having learned and recommendations they made for moving forward.
