Abstract:

On February 26, 2014, FRA conducted a full-scale side impact test of a DOT112J340W specification tank car (DOT112) at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI) in Pueblo, CO. The shell of the car was struck at its mid-length by a 297,000 pound ram car equipped with a 12-inch by 12-inch impactor. The intent of this test was to demonstrate that the car could successfully resist a moderately high-energy impact without puncturing the tank shell. Figure 1 shows the tank car in its pre-
