Abstract:The Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) program was established via a charter in March 2010 with an initial focus on V2I communications for safety. Over the years, the program evolved beyond a safety-communications focus to move more broadly in enabling technology research, prototyping and assessment of V2I applications, and deployment and outreach support. After a decade of research and deployment support, the program was concluded as a separate Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Joint Program Office (JPO)-sponsored connected vehicle program. Active V2I program projects were either completed or transitioned to other program areas to continue through their individual project life cycle. This paper summarizes the program’s history - the research, development, and deployment support conducted; program and project accomplishments; and knowledge and technology developed that can be transferred to/shared with other projects and programs. For completeness, gaps that remain and that may warrant further research were identified. Significant work has been accomplished through the V2I Program in the past decade to address the original objectives and research questions posed under the V2I Program. The program completed significant research in enabling technologies that provided foundational elements for V2I.
