This study includes a review of European Union (EU), US and Asian standards, codes, and regulations related to high speed rail. Key results include: 1) a detailed survey performed on the topics of global standards and regulations for transportation noise with a focus on high speed rail applications in Europe (>155 mph), Asia (China and Japan, >155 mph) and US (Tier III: 160–220 mph). Researchers summarized the identified standards and regulations compared and contrasted to provide a reference document for the US rail industry; 2) identified and compared and contrasted high speed rail noise definition methods (metrics) and measurement techniques, as deployed in different global regions; 3) identified and compared and contrasted rolling stock design modifications, sound path interruption and receiver techniques used globally to reduce transportation noise to acceptable levels; and 4) industry stakeholders took part in interviews to review the study results and obtain comments regarding codes, standards, regulations and recommended practices, including compliance and enforcement.
