Abstract:The current report draws upon all of the work completed to date in outlining a plan of action to promote bicycling and walking as viable transportation options for more Americans. The goals of doubling the current percentage of bicycling and walking trps and reducing by ten percent the number of pedestrians and bicyclists killed or injured are challenging, yet obtainable, and would reap significant transportation as well as other societal benefits. This report is about enhancing the travel options of bicycling and walking. The National Transportation Choices for a Changing America presents a plan of action for activities at the Federal State and local levels for meeting the following goals: - To double the current percentage (from 7.9% to 15.8%) of total trips by bicycling and walking; and - To simultaneously reduce by ten percent the number of bicyclists and pedestrians killed or injured in traffic crashes.
