The Train Energy and Dynamics Simulator (TEDS) is simulation software, funded by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and developed by Sharma & Associates, Inc. (SA), to study train operation safety and performance as affected by equipment, train makeup, train handling, track conditions, operating practices and environmental conditions. This report describes the validation of the TEDS predictions using data collected from a revenue service unit train. The approach to validating TEDS and the associated acceptance criteria are described and applied. The analysis of simulated results and their comparison to the measured test data show that TEDS predictions are acceptable. Train speed predictions are within 2–3 mph of the measured speed. Coupler forces, as high as 200 kips, are within ± 20%, and brake system pressures are within 3–5 psi, of measured data. These results clearly establish the ability of TEDS to accurately replicate field events.
