Abstract:The objective of the Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) Specification is to enable infrastructure owners and operators (IOOs) to make harmonized work zone data available for third party use. The project aims to get data on work zones into vehicles to help automated driving systems (ADS) and human drivers navigate more safely. The main objectives of the Work Zone Data Exchange Workshop that took place in April of 2019 were threefold. The first goal was to explore lessons learned from the first year of the WZDx project, including technical and institutional challenges and opportunities. The second objective was to identify next steps to accelerate the adoption of a common work zone data specification that can expand over time to meet emerging needs of automated driving systems (ADS). The third and final objective was to clarify the roles and needs of infrastructure owners and operators (IOOs) who produce these data, developers of ADS-ready digital maps that consume these data, and other key stakeholders.
