Abstract:This report provides an overview of the Crash Data Improvement Program (CDIP) covering the period from October 2010 through May 2013 during which time 10 States participated. Common findings from the CDIPs include that States lack formal data quality management programs and do not routinely report data quality measurements in most of the “six pack” attributes of timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity/consistency, integration, and accessibility. Common recommendations include developing formal data quality management practices; creating a single, centralized crash data records system; increasing the detail in descriptions of key crash data improvement programs listed in the Strategic Plan for Traffic Records Improvement, and creating routine reports of a complete set of data quality measurements. Recommendations for the future of the CDIP program are also provided, including expanding the focus of the CDIP to go beyond safety engineering concerns to address law enforcement and injury control as well.
