Abstract:In 1998, 5,220 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States - a decrease of 24 percent from the 6,870 pedestrians killed in 1988. On average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 101 minutes. There were 69,000 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes in 1998. On average, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic crash every 8 minutes. The tables in this fact sheet break down the statistics as to age, sex, time and day of week, alcohol involvement and by state. 2 Figures, 6 tables.
